Finding the right smartphone for your needs

Finding the right smartphone can be hard… but not if you read this article. Let’s take a look at three phones and see who they’d be perfect for.

HTC Magic

Android is trying to take over the world, and its new home is the beautiful HTC Magic. It has all the good stuff that made the first Android phone (the G1) good, but puts it all in a touchscreen-only body, which is both sleek and sexy. Since the keyboard has been removed, the HTC Magic also has a full, onscreen keyboard, a first for any Android phone, lining it up as a direct rival to the iPhone. You also get the Android Marketplace, which lets you download and install third party apps to your HTC Magic, and it ends up creating a smartphone that really can morph into whatever you want it to be. It really is a kind of magic; and if you want the facility to utterly change your phone into something new, with custom apps, you want the HTC Magic.

Palm Pre

What does the Palm Pre offer that’s different? Well, one could talk about the WebOS interface it uses, as it’s unique in the annals of phone history. And indeed, there’s one feature of WebOS, directly related to the keyboard, that makes the Palm Pre so cool. Universal search. Now, many phones do that, but the Palm Pre does it so much more cleverly. Just start typing what you want to know about, from the front screen, and the Palm Pre will search your contacts, apps, music, pictures, and even the internet, to interpret and find what you’re looking for. That really is a cool feature, and it may well make the Palm Pre the coolest QWERTY phone out there. If you value the interface above all else, the Palm Pre is the phone for you.

Toshiba TG01

So, fighting for WebOS, there is the Palm Pre, with its mind-boggling interface. As for Android, there’s the innovative HTC Magic. But Windows Mobile goes down a different route. You see, Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a powerful processor and a big display. Well, say hello to the Toshiba TG01, the phone with the fastest processor AND the biggest display in the history of phones! Weighing in at 1GHz and 4.1 inches respectively, those specs mean that the Toshiba TG01 will run Windows Mobile more smoothly than any other phone in existence; as well as that with that immense screen, the Toshiba TG01 makes drilling down into menus, and actually getting into the internals of Windows, so much easier. If power is your thing (and lets be honest, who doesn’t want a powerful phone?), then the Toshiba TG01 is the phone for you!

Three way showdown - Android vs Windows vs Symbian

They’re the big three operating systems in the world of smartphones, but which is best? To find out, let’s check out the three most exciting smartphones of 2009.

HTC Magic - Google Android

The HTC Magic is comparable to the iPhone, sharing a similar keyboard-less design. Again, it’s with the software that the HTC Magic shines, with Android living up to the title some have given it, that of ‘game changer’. Its completely open source nature makes adapting the OS very easy, and the interface itself is once again a finger-friendly, sleek, and polished affair, with gesture controls the order of the day. The tight integration of the full Google suite (including Apps and Gmail), makes it a real force to be reckoned with, and it has to be said that the HTC Magic is a truly stunning phone.

Toshiba TG01 - Windows Mobile

While Google Android is bringing open source touch-based power to the party, rivals Windows Mobile haven’t been resting on their laurels, and the new fruit of their labours is the ultra-powerful Toshiba TG01. Not only does it have the biggest screen ever seen on a mobile phone, measuring in at 4.1 inches, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the most powerful processor put into a mobile phone.

Called Snapdragon, the 1GHz, dual-core processor gives the Toshiba TG01 sheer grunt, which is what it needs to let Windows Mobile live up to its full potential, the Toshiba TG01 is arguably the best WinMo phone that’s ever been announced.

Sony Ericsson Idou - Symbian

However, the Toshiba TG01 may not be the overall phone of the year, because the Sony Ericsson Idou is out to steal its crown. This features Symbian S60 Touch, and the design is more reminiscent of the HTC Magic, as it lacks a keyboard. That’s not going to be an issue, though, because the interface on the Sony Ericsson Idou, a custom design by Sony Ericsson, is one of the nicest, most finger-friendly UIs in a long time. Oh, and of course, there’s one hardware feature that the Sony Ericsson Idou outdoes both phones on. It’s the first phone announced for the UK to come with an immense twelve megapixel camera, and as such, it may well be, not just the camera phone of the year, but the best camera phone in the history of mobile phones.

First Look Reviews: HTC Magic

Having gone to MWC2009 expecting a plethora of Google Android based phones we were presented with one unfinished model, albeit a quite promising one, and this is it the HTC Magic

Still No 3.5mm Jack For HTC Magic?

By far, one of the widest spread complaints of the G1 was the lack of a built in 3.5mm jack, which allows people to easily listen to music or videos by simply plugging in their headphones. Instead, if you wanted to plug in your headphones, you were (and still are) pretty much forced to by a 3.5mm to mini-usb adapter.
audio-adapter-htc-magicIt’s semi-annoying for two main reasons:

1. You actually have to buy it (not sure if they’ll ship with one)

2. You have this awkward, dangling dongle of an adapter to mess with.

So out of all improvements, why didn’t HTC include a 3.5mm adapter for the HTC Magic phone? They already nixed the slide out keyboard from the G1, so you would think they would have enough “play” to add the standard audio jack.

Guess not.

In the mean time, if you need one of these adapters (which, most of you probably will), you can get one off Amazon for pretty darn cheap here

HTC Magic Review - The HTC Google G2 Phone is Just Magic

The HTC Google G2 Phone is the latest entrant into the android touch screen smart phone line up of HTC. As it is a “special” one: this phone has not yet been released in the United States, and has only a very limited release internationally, I have great interest of full disclosure to let you know this mobile phone. The HTC Google G2 Phone is known internationally as the HTC Magic, and it is a pretty snazzy phone.

Hardware

The HTC Magic smart phone Google G2 is enclosed in a cool white plastic case. It has a slightly protruding bottom that does not hinder the sleekness of its design in any way. A wide 3.2-inch touch screen sprawls on the face of the phone. The LCD TFT screen is vibrant and colorful with its high HVGA 320X480 pixel resolution. The screen attracts fingerprints but this is a commonly found blip in most touch screen phones in the market today. There is also a trackball for navigation. The absence of a physical QWERTY keyboard on this wholly touch screen operated phone has helped the phone knock off some of its weight and appear slimmer.

Software

The alluring wrapping of the HTC Magic is augmented by the android software platform that it uses as its brain. This software ensures fast and high performance of applications of the phone. The superior quality android operating system also allows you to add new applications and games to your HTC Magic smart phone through the android market by exploring options like ‘shopping’, ‘arcade’, ‘social’ and ‘travel’.

Android software in the mobile phone also implies more customization- users can tailor the handset to meet their specific needs by swapping the home screen, applications or even the dialer style. The Android software also lets you access third party applications and not just the core applications and data on the phone. This makes the HTC Magic more open.

The phone has integrations with Google applications. Google Talk, G mail, Google search, Google calendar are some of the applications accessible via the HTC Magic. Google Street view has been integrated with the phone’s mapping applications making it possible to view streets virtually to find out the way. The phone’s GPS facility supports efficacious working of maps.

Multimedia

The HTC Magic has a 3.2 Mega pixel auto focus enabled camera for the masterpiece photograph.. Its powerful video recording capabilities allows you to post videos directly on You Tube or share videos with friends via e-mail or MMS. It is capable of playing media files including videos and audio files. The video looks perfect with the 480×320 pixels screen and the music sounds beautiful. It supports only video formats like MP4 and 3GP which is slightly less when compared to the current standards of android mobiles. That’s doesn’t matter, third party software like Nidesoft DVD to Mobile Converter can convert DVD videos to HTC Magic video and Nidesoft Video Converter can convert all other formats video to HTC Magic video. It also supports rang of audio files including MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV and OGG, and the third party software can also be used for audio files.

Other interesting features:

The phone has high performance Internet mettle due to the presence of HSDPA with a speed of 7.2 Mbps and Wi Fi support. Fast downloads make your mobile Internet experience on the HTC Magic a joy. Stereo Blue tooth connectivity is also present in the phone.

The battery life of HTC G2 is much longer than HTC G1. The stand by time is 660 hours for WCDMA and 420 hours for GSM. The talk time is 400 minutes for WCDMA and 450 minutes for GSM. The 1340 mAh Lithium-ion battery is rechargeable.

Conclusion

Based on what I’ve seen, the HTC Magic seems like a really solid device. We like the Magic, maybe even love it a little bit. But it is a little disappointed at its price of about 6oo dollars, much higher than the new iPhone 3G S and the new Palm Pre.
