From Taiwan comes the HTC Magic - and at first glance it appears that this phone is a bit of a misnomer. While everyone coos and aahs about the Apple iPhone, the HTC Magic quietly goes about its business - that for which it was designed, and which it performs with impeccable ability and seamless ease.

The HTC is powered by Android™ - upgraded in this version of the phone - and designed to include the Google suit of services like Mail, Search and Maps. Specifically made for surfing the internet the HTC Magic is designed to be as easy to use as possible.

The phone has a ‘triple’ effect home page screen which can be moved left or right, showing the icons on both side-pages with a simple swipe off to one side or the other. The icons are easily rearranged into position to suit the user. The simplistically designed touch screen really shows its design merits by the ease with which this is done - either by dragging or double tapping where appropriate.

Google search enables you to be up to date with the latest information, for example finding night club or concert information. With integral Bluetooth, the HTC Magic supports tunes via wireless headsets, and allows video capture. Videos can be emailed, sent by MMS or even published on YouTube™ directly from the phone. Social events are thus easily recorded and communicated - this is the ultimate phone for the socially-orientated person.

We liked:

- The touch screen. We found it to be really excellent, both in terms of its functionality and the ease with which the interface works. It responds to light taps when they are required, and harder taps and hold-downs make dragging and dropping really simple to do.

- The Android upgrade. For once we have a system designed specifically to do what it is intended for. The result is a speedy system, easy access, and simple searching on the web. Why can’t all phones be designed this way?

- Easy messaging.

- The interface is one of the nicest we have seen. Simple enough for the least IT savvy person to learn, and intuitive in its design.

- The keyboard is good. HTC made a good choice - not only is the keyboard well spaced, doing away with the physical keypad gives the added bonus of a super-lightweight phone that is sure to please those who are tired of sagging pockets and stretching handbag straps. In fact, until you get used to it, the phone feels a little too light in the hand.

- Tight Google integration. We’d expect nothing less from a phone designed for the job. We were more than impressed with what we found.

- Slim and lightweight.

We weren’t too impressed with:

- No 3.5mm headphone. For people who are used to one - this comes as a bit of a disappointment.

- 2 year contract: Two years in today’s world is a very long time - especially considering how fast technology develops. We were disappointed with this, and feel it will put many potential users off what is really a very nice handset.

- Some people have complained about touch screen response issues. We didn’t experience any, at the time of our test - in fact the phone was very responsive.

- Some might find it slightly lightweight. We felt this was a boon - at last we have a phone which will not ruin your clothing, or feel as though you are dragging a brick around with you.

The review of the phone should be divided into two components – the Android Platform and HTC phone.

Android

Never before has any platform drawn so much attention as Android and the new platform is sure to delight the smart phone users. The platform is optimized for the touch screen and has a user friendly user interface. The platform makes the web-based communication applications (email, chat, You Tube) mainstream though Orkut is a notable omission. Google’s mobile strategy is clear – Popularize its online PC properties like search, email, maps on the mobile by providing the same experience across the two platforms. Google wants its user base on PC to use its properties while they are online using the mobile. It also wants to attract new users by riding on its brand equity and its strong position in web based communication applications. The Google id gives automatic access to email, chat and Youtube and there is no separate log-in required at the time of usage.

The response of the system is fast and one never has to wait for the mobile phone to transit from one screen to another. It is not clear if the response is fast due to the processor or the Android platform.

The best part of the new platform is its browser. The browser gives a near PC experience to web browsing. It has the capability of opening multiple browser screens and it is easy to switch between the screens with relative ease. It is possible to zoom in/out the screen to suit the individual preference in terms of the font size. The text adjusts to the screen size at any zoom level. Touch and the track ball enhance the navigation experience (Kudos to the track ball. It mirrors the mouse experience).

The phone lacks the features for business users e.g. there is no Microsoft Exchange Server, no synchronization with Outlook e-mail, Calendar, Contacts, etc.

SMS is a pleasant experience. It provides conversation threads in the same screen. Composing SMS is like composing a mail and it provides the facility of attaching a file to the SMS (converts into MMS). This is similar to Symbian but it allows the users to create slides to be attached to the SMS. However, it is not possible to forward the SMS which is not only surprising but also shocking. Also, there is no facility of delivery notifications. There is no on-screen input and hence the keypad needs to be used for typing any message

Though the platform provides a clear benefit to the web users, it is on a weak wicket when it comes to the call management and contact management. The call management suite of Symbian gives a much better experience e.g. the option of sending SMS/MMS using the call log is not possible in Android. The call log is confusing as it lists dialed, received and missed calls in the same list. In the contact management, it is not possible to send the contact as a business card.

Applications: Android has a Marketplace from where the applications and games can be downloaded (freeware as well as paid). The quality of the applications is good and a number of useful utilities are available for free but the number of such applications is limited. The users can set shortcut keys for the application launch. However, it is not possible to make folders and hence management of applications and multiple files is a problem.

HTC Phone

The phone has an excellent touch screen and innovative form factor. The track ball on the phone for navigation takes the experience up several notches. However, the phone lacks a good speaker. The signal quality is poor and the keypad is hard to use. The battery life is poor and does not do any justice to the functionalities that Android has to offer. The GPS did not work properly during the test period. Camera quality is poor and taking pictures is a challenge. There are no camera settings like focus, zoom, etc. and video recording is also not possible. No option for video call.

Verdict: Go for this phone only if you want a good web experience. The platform still needs to improve on basics of a good phone but it is a good start by Google and it seems that the next battle would be fought on the platform – who will be the winner Symbian, Android and Microsoft.

For all of you out there that have been eagerly awaiting the upcoming launch of the second phone to use the Google Android operating system, dubbed the “HTC Magic”, your wait is almost up! Within just a few short weeks, May 5th to be exact, the HTC Magic will make its appearence in stores across Europe. No release date has been given yet for the US, although industry experts seem to think that the Europe launch will be a test market for US demand.

“The carrier said the phone will be free when customers sign up for a two-year contract with fees of about $51 per month. The plan includes unlimited web use, 700 minutes of calls, 250 text messages and unlimited calls to landlines and other Vodafone customers.”

So how many of you are going to purchase one of theses super Android smartphones? The price is nice (free), for those that are willing to enter the two year contract (compared to the price that the G1 cost in the US even with a two year contract). I expect that these will be hot little numbers, and I can’t imagine that they won’t be far behind in releasing them for the US Market. I mean, we can’t have our European friends having cool new phones that we can’t get!

There are a lot of things one can say about the HTC Magic but since most of the people have the attention span of 5 year olds, here’s a snapshot look at the mobile phone.

The Look from the Outside

The HTC Magic has dropped the G1’s QWERTY keyboard and instead, has an onscreen keyboard much like the Iphone. This move has given it a very smooth finish and has certainly added to its aesthetic appeal. It is definitely thin and is very lightweight. Its outer shell, although plastic, is very sturdy and fits comfortably at the palm of your hand. It also has a very beautiful 320×480 touchscreen that is very responsive and a pleasure to use. It also has a trackball at the bottom of the front to give you a different way of getting from one point to the next. It also switches from portrait to landscape quickly.

Basically, its look is very graceful and is certainly something that should attract a lot of people. The very sleek and curvaceous design is certainly an improvement from its ancestors.

The Look from the Inside

The HTC Magic is working on the Android operating system and allows people to access the multitude of Google services like Google Maps, Google Search, and even Youtube. The interface is a joy to look at and is quite easy to use. It also has access to the Android Market and thus, to hundreds and hundreds of mostly free applications. Plus, the advanced version of the Android Os, which is endearingly called “cupcake,” has a lot of feature improvements that gets it closer to Apple’s OS intuitiveness.

It also has a 3.2 megapixel camera that has impressive capabilities in image and video capture. Plus, thanks to its access to Google Services, one can even upload videos directly to Youtube. It is also equipped a WebKit browser engine and a JavaScript engine that gives a respectable browsing experience. It also has other features like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Connectivity.

The problem is that it lacks a 3.5 mm headphone jack, is short on memory and its battery life can use a bit of tweaking. Certainly, there are some things that need improvement but as it stands, it is still an above par mobile phone.

The Verdict

It is certainly a good smartphone, not a great one. Its pros greatly outnumber it cons but unfortunately, these cons are major considerations by buyers when purchasing smartphones. It may not be the best smartphone in the market today but the HTC Magic definitely has a lot to give to those willing to endure its faults.

Now that the Palm Pre has been unleashed on the world, let’s take a look at it, and see how it plans to overthrow its rivals.

Looks and Design

First up, let’s take a look at the Palm Pre’s hardware, as compared to what are probably its two closest rivals: the HTC Magic and the iPhone 3GS. Of those three phones, the HTC Magic is probably the one that scores the lowest in terms of looks, as it looks the most ‘boring’ of the three. The Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS, on the other hand, both have sleek looks, with glossy, curvy panels. It’s a very close-run thing between the iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre, and it simply isn’t possible to decide which is the best, looks-wise. It’ll simply come down to which feels right when you hold it.

Hardware Features

With hardware features, once again, all three phones are pretty evenly matched, with 3 megapixel cameras on all of them. One key advantage the Palm Pre has over the others, however, is that both the iPhone 3GS and HTC Magic lack hardware keyboards, while the Palm Pre has a full QWERTY keyboard. For messaging and emails, that’s a big plus. And whilst the Palm Pre has a smaller screen than both the iPhone 3GS and HTC Magic, its touch-sensitive screen actually extends, unbelievably, beyond the screen itself. It could be argued that they could have given the Palm Pre a bigger screen, but the sheer fact the screen extends, in effect, beyond the screen is a sure to turn heads, and it gives the Pre the edge on hardware features, despite the iPhone 3GS having much more internal memory (coming in at either 16 or 32Gb, compared to the Palm Pre’s 8Gb).

Software and Interface

Finally, we come to interfaces. The iPhone 3GS has the latest iPhone 3.0 software, which brings with it such cool features as voice control throughout the device, and the ability to edit videos captured with the camera. The HTC Magic, meanwhile, uses widgets, allowing you to customise the front end of your phone in any way you want. Also included in the HTC Magic is tight integration with Google apps, such as Gmail and Gtalk. However, in terms of interfaces, the Palm Pre is on a whole other level; its WebOS interface has to be seen to be believed, as it’s quite simply the slickest OS ever seen on a mobile phone. EVERYTHING is achieved through a variety of intuitive gesture and swipe controls, and as for integration and synergy between apps, the Palm Pre leaves even the HTC Magic in the dust. Of these three phones, it’s a close thing, but the Palm Pre is good enough to beat both of its rivals.

My touch 3G was released as HTC Magic which has been release in Europe for about a year. Some difference is the newest T mobile phone use T mobile 3G’s network with 1700/2100 MHz frequency but HTC Magic use 3G network with 900/2100 MHz frequency.

If you compare T mobile my touch 3 G with T mobile G1 you will see the main difference is keyboard because My touch does not have a physical keyboard (T mobile G1 have a physical keyboard with Slide-out 5 row QWERTY keyboard)and that is the biggest disappointment.

Nonetheless, T mobile my touch 3 G has more internal Rom memory (512MB),more Ram memory(288MB) which make an applications run faster, better battery life (Rechargeable Lithium-ion battery,Capacity: 1340 mAh) which make T mobile my touch 3 G can standby up to 660 hours for WCDMA and up to 420 hours for GSM,more micro SD memory card support (4GB),have Microsoft Exchange Support which good for business user, have Sherpa application which help user to discovery local location and find favorites place and absolutely beautiful more than T mobile G1.

Another important is that T mobile my touch comes with the Cupcake Android 1.5 firmware with user interface refinements, performance improvements, new applications, new features, including the ability to type messages in portrait or landscape view, video recording, and improved browser

So,if you don’t mind about software keyboard and think T mobile G1 is not good enough for you especially its ugly model.I think T mobile my touch 3G with 199$ and two-year contract is a good choice for everyone.
